Tuesday 12/28/21 Still at Erick’s.  Sightseeing day

Up at 8am, grey and 65 degrees.  A day to sleep in but we wanted to go to various locations while we were here. So no rest for the wicked.

We took to the road despite the poor weather reports.  I was still impressed with the long straight roads going for miles and miles, up and down ever so gently.  So many of these southern towns were very similar in appearance.  The tall skinny trees and the big fields that probably were mostly plantations in the days gone by.

We visited Jimmy Carter’s home town in Plains, GA.  He still lives in this same family home and there is a big black fence around it and Secret Service staff manages his safety.  His High School and the town itself is very much a “Rah Rah town” for him.  Here are some of the sights.

This is the Plains GA train station, campaign headquarters for his Presidential campaign.  Cell phones still do not work here.  Amazing times

His pecan plantation is seen here behind Moreno and me.  The site is part of the National Monument so I brought along my Passport Book to document my visit.

Of course, he was mostly know for being a peanut grower, so this smiling peanut is of course memorializing that.

Eldon and Moreno are standing at the head of the path to his actual home where he grew up as a child.  Pretty neat.

After the Carter tour we stopped at the Confederate prison of the Union soldiers POWs.  Built for 10,000, it ultimately had 35,000 starving and very sick men.  When finally relieved, one officer said it would have taken 7 men just to cast a shadow. The guy who was in charge was ultimately killed for “crimes against humanity”.  This was also the memorial for the POW’s in all wars, some of whom never returned home.  It was a pretty emotional place.

Along the way back home we passed by the Richland Rum Distillery in Richland, GA.  There sure seems to be a lot of them down here.  The town looks deserted except for this business.  Naturally a few bottles came home with us.

As we were going back to Erick’s he asked us to have him treat us to a sushi dinner in downtown Columbus.  One of their favorite spots.  Unfortunately they did not take dogs and Judith couldn’t come so we just went there to order and take it home.  It was ok since it gave us another evening for just the 4 of us to eat together.

The location is right on the banks of the Chattahoochee river and  Erick had brought Luna along (his miniature snauzer) so we took Moreno and walked along it while they prepared our meal.  It was fun and neat to see that we were in Georgia across the river from Alabama. Luna and Moreno did not hit to off initially, Luna barking like a maniac - but it was her home so … After a few days though, the strong silent type (Moreno) broke through and now we had a different problem.  Luna wanted him, bad.  Moreno wanted her too.  Flirt, response, …hmmm maybe once again they need to be separated, despite Moreno having nothing more to offer than a valiant attempt.

Alabama across the river.  Here the two are ignoring each other.

Notice Luna has her tonge out, Moreno playing hard to get and yawning.

Finally got home to eat and sleep.  But before we could all relax completely Erick still had daddy duty and tried to play his new accordion to the girls.  So sweet.  Looks like he  is killing his audience.

Eldon and I went back to our Alto where our “baby” Moreno was waiting for us.  He gets all excited when he sees us come in.  Too bad he is left to guard the Alto, but …
