Sunday 1/2/22 Notasulga, AL to Starkville, MS

Sunday 1/2/22 Notasulga, AL to Starkville, MS

Up at 7am to heavy rains and grey.  Raining started at 5am as predicted. During a small break in the rain we finished moving a few things into the car and headed out.  Not sure if Moreno even got a morning pee walk or not.  Fortunately we parked so it was straight out and no U-Turn required,  So goodbye to the Whippoorwill Vineyard and on to Mississippi.

This is to be a full day of traveling and seeing some pretty emotional sights along the way.  We stopped at Horseshoe Bend Battlefield in Alabama where Andrew Jackson wiped out the Creek Indians using cannons against their red-stained clubs.

Clara getting her Passport stamped.

Freedom Riders in Alabama.  Birmingham, Alabama. A lot of history to be seen in Alabama.  Pretty sad too.  But a lot of changes evolved from all that history.

These four teenage (black of course) girls were killed by a bomb placed in their church.

Martin Luther King.

When the "Children's March" happened to protest the murder of the four black girls (and the lack of police response) the police turned these water cannons on them.

Looking down the barrel of a water cannon with pressures enough to break adult bones, let alone the children of the protest.

The serenity fountain reflecting pool, dry and filthy of course.

The National Monument "memorial" to the Freedom Riders bus fire-bombed and burned by the KKK.  Seriously, this is all there is, and the tractor is not even part of it.

The three sign boards.  Yep, that's all.

This house is in need of some work so mother nature took care to keep it standing by growing a tree in the middle.  I wonder if anyone lives in there.

We thought of Mike Grace when we saw this sign by the freeway.  His hobby is watching Nascar racing so it fit.

Another, just because photo, is this wrapper of a lunch on the road.  It is their idea of the fast food place "Jack in the Box".  They are are just "Jack" in the South.

Our driving weather.

Getting there was fun, throwing out a prodigious water spray to discourage passing.

We arrived at Darrel and Donna's place in Starkville, MS at 3:30pm.  It started to rain and soon changed to snow.  It was beautiful but a good thing we were inside where it was safe and warm.  We had a nice dinner and then chatted for a while.  We slept in the Alto so we could be sure it would not freeze up.  The heater worked which was great since it was 21 degrees outside and there was snow on the ground.  Their dog, Sky, was beautiful.  It had been left behind when the dairy farm across from their property had left him and so, of course, Donna adopted him.  She also has a feral cat she is working on, and a squirrel that Moreno had his eye on.

Sky looking at us.  Wondering if we are edible I expect.

Donna worked up this very cute "Hi Ya" display for us.

Our weather screens.

And so the snow started and we went to bed.  Thanks D&D for a great dinner and hours of talk.  Tomorrow is for Texas.
