Not raining but temperature going down to 37 degrees and the wind is back. Had Electricity, yay!! Once again our heater worked in the trailer and that was a good thing. In case you get here before the photos, please come back. Despite posting two days today, with photos, these refused to populate. Hopefully they will, but if not we will try again later. Thanks for your patience as I try to figure this blogging-thing out.
We had tried to get some breakfast in Lynchburg, TN but it was Sunday and those towns do not open on Sunday. After all, there are so many churches in the South that I guess they have to close the stores so people can go to church instead. But we think that there must be people working in those giant black building making sure the whiskey is not stolen.
This is "downtown" Lynchberg and the home of the Jack Daniels gift shop - fortunately (as was everything) closed on Sunday until after church. Moreno got a good run in through the deserted parking lot.
As we came into town yesterday we started seeing these huge black buildings. Our taste-master (Matt) yesterday told us that JDD has almost 100 of these. They house 60,000 to 90,000 barrels of whisky, and 60+ gallons of whisky per barrel. This is where you want to come when the end of the world is imminent.
As we drove along the roads in TN we noticed that bridges all had people’s names on them. I suppose if you have enough money they would name one after you. They named the bridge as well as the river it went over. I had never noticed that in any state.
Along the way we spotted the Lodge cast iron factory (and store) in Pittsburg, TN. This should not have been a stop but we could not resist. “Just curious”. Yeah right. As if we don’t already have anything Lodge (or similar) that we ever needed. They sure have a variety of products. Who would have known.
Today's route took us through several state crossings. Who knew you would have to go through North Carolina to get to South Carolina. Beautiful but narrow roads, some 20 mpg corners, and a gorgeous sunset - cool since we were going to Sunset, SC. Finally around 7pm, several hours later than planned, and dozens of miles on lonely skinny dark and twisting mountain roads, we arrive at Steve’s house. Thankfully he met us at a gate on another narrow dark road and escorted us in. OMG, I thought he was living in a secret location like a CIA or FBI agent or someone who needed to be relocated and identify changed.
But the place is worth the effort of finding it. He lives there with his Fiancé Lori and her daughter Madison was visiting for the holidays with her dog Iota. We were worried about Moreno meeting Iota but so long as they were both on a leash it worked out. Iota is beautiful. Also a Rescue dog. Lasagna was delicious despite Lori's claims that it was over-cooked waiting for us. Not even slightly believable.
We appreciate their waiting for us for a delicious lasagna meal. Eldon stayed up talking into the wee hours but I was beat. Apparently Steve had some Jack Daniels to share …
I'll be posting pictures of the house tomorrow. All for now.
